With the graduation of my middle baby from high school our thoughts are already turning to dorm rooms and what we can do to spruce up the dull, tight spaces.
Each child is different and their tastes are different, and often times much different from you. My oldest daughter has a very modern, twenty –something taste. Mine are traditional and sad to say, the tastes of a middle aged person. Then there’s my middle daughter… very bright eyed and bushy tailed, and soon-to-be living in a dorm room.
Since we are limited to what we can do, I want to add as many details as I can to the boring, stuffy room. Here’s a list of a few items you can add to your child’s dorm room this September.
Mirrors – Although, you’re not technically allowed to add physical structures to your dorm rooms, adding little pieces like a floor mirror can make the room appear bigger than it actually is (and we all know how small they can be!)
Letter holders – Desk accessories are all the rage. I know my oldest daughter (at 25 years old) still enjoys her desk / stationary accessories. Surprisingly, a cheaper option for the beautiful (but expensive) letter holders is HomeSense! They have a great variety of stationary and desk accessories for any age. A few items can help your child get organized, while looking extra chic.
Garbage Cans – Who knew a garbage can could add so much to a room? Trendy garbage cans are popping up everywhere, including the Dollar Store! My oldest daughter found a marble patterned white and grey garbage can from Dollarama for a measly $1.50!
Pictures – Nothing says “home” like a few of your favourite memories from back home. We all know how tough it can be being apart from your friends and family, so why not spruce up the place with a few photos! Whether they’re in frames around the dorm, or a cute gallery wall, they can make missing home few less gruesome.
Bedding - this is the one feature you’ll actually be able to change and transform your dorm with. As far as we’re aware, most dorm rooms come equipped with a single bed. So finding cute bedding shouldn’t be too difficult! Many department stores offer a wide range of comforters and duvets in every colour or pattern! This is where you can really customize the feel your child is going for.
Towels and bath accessories - I love that their rooms have an attached bathing area, why not bring the colours from their new room into the bathroom? HomeSense offers a wide variety of colours when it comes to towel sets.
We need to make this space a fun and calming area where the kids will feel safe and at home, in their new home away from home. Are your children moving away for school? Let us know where you shop for dorm room essentials!
Thanks for letting me show you the simplicity of my life as I turn it into something chic.
